TIME : 2016/2/29 18:41:13
The Suite Life: the $39,260 Barrel-Blending Experience at the Baglioni Hotel Cala del Porto

For the high-roller looking to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a suiter-than-thou experience, this downright outrageous package, which includes views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and 300 bottles of personalized wine along with lavish accommodations, does the trick.

The Digs: The Gran Panoramic Vista Mare Suite, Baglioni Hotel Cala del Porto

Size: 800 square feet

Price: $1,788 a night

The Skinny: The luxe Panoramic Sea View suite at this Relais & Chateaux hotel looks out onto the bay of Punta Ala, with the famed island of Elba in the distance. Swathed in local Italian marble and earth tones accented by aubergine and floral patterns, the decadent set of rooms includes a living room, bedroom, and twin baths. A terrace framed by floor-to-ceiling windows and billowing drapes boasts spectacular views of the Tuscan coast. Baglioni Hotel Cala del Porto recently acquired the La Vela beach club, which now houses a beachfront bar, Turkish bath house, spa, and solarium. Spend an evening at La Spiaggia restaurant perfecting your Italian with barman Leo Buono, who’s touted to be the “best in the Riviera.”

The Backstory: Guests of the Gran Panoramic Vista Mare Suite are of the deep-pocketed, Italian-bred type. It’s still a secret well-kept from American travelers and cherished by prestigious locals who summer on the archipelago. The true tale is that of the property, the first in the Baglioni collection. Guido Polito, the CEO, was raised at the hotel, which is where his father, Roberto, fell in love with his wife.

Pro Tip: Seasonally, through October, wine-loving guests with an extra $40,000 or so to burn can head to the mountain town of Gavorrano for an afternoon wine tasting and private blending session with Allessandro Cellai, the oenologist at the renowned Rocca di Frassinello estate. The winery is home to a Renzo Piano–designed barrel room (the largest in the world) as well as David LaChapelle’s masterpiece “Rapture of the Grape.” View it in person, and then cherish its image on every last one of the 300-plus bottles of the wine you craft with Cellai, which will be shipped directly to your home.
