The Knickerbocker

The Baccarat has company. Other new upscale hotels have recently been settling in midtown, which is in the midst of a real estate and restaurant boom.

Stay at the just-opened Knickerbocker (doubles from $625, pictured above) to be in Times Square. The 330 cocoon-like guest rooms and standout restaurant from Charlie Palmer are the antidote to the intensity outside.

For all of its over-the-top features—not least the 90-floor tower that it anchors on West 57th Street—the nearly year-old Park Hyatt New York (doubles from $795) is supremely comfortable, with an intimate bar and 210 spacious rooms designed by Yabu Pushelberg.

Eco and refined aren’t mutually exclusive; they just need careful consideration to support one another. At Barry Sternlicht’s other new property, 1 Hotel Central Park (doubles from $525), opening at the end of the month, that means offering free rides in a house Tesla and bringing back Jams, Jonathan Waxman’s pioneering restaurant.
