Gǎntōng Temple
From Zhōnghé Temple it’s a nice 11km walk south to Gǎntōng Temple, Qīngbì Stream and/or Guānyīn Pavilion, from where you can continue to the road and pick up a Dàlǐ-bound bus.

Former British Consulate Building
Běihǎis first consulate of a Western country is a whitewashed edifice built in 1885 that now sits inside an elite school. The guard will let you in for a peek if youre nice.

Beach
East of the water wheels, this beach area is bursting on weekends with volleyball games, kites, speedboats and coracle raft trips (Y30 to Y40) across the chocolate-coloured river.

Harbin Main Synagogue
The beautiful old Main Synagogue, built in 1909, has been recently refurbished and has reopened as a concert venue with a small museum. Close by is the former Jewish Middle School .

Lǚshùn Railway Station
Built in 1903 during Russia’s brief control of the area, this handsome station was rebuilt in 2005 following the original design. It’s worth a visit en route to other sights.

Hong Kung Temple
This peaceful, 200-year-old temple is dedicated to Li Lie, a Han-dynasty general. The boat-shaped sculpture in the main hall is used to offer wine to the deities during religious festivities.

Drogon Gompa
This Sakyapa-school temple includes the scary gönkhang (protector chapel). Set atop a hill, it is adorned with snarling stuffed wolves and Tantric masks. Only men may enter this chapel.

Old Wan Chai Post Office
A short distance to the east of Wan Chai Market is this tiny colonial-style building erected in 1913 and now serving as a resource centre operated by the Environmental Protection Department .

Jardine Matheson
Standing at No 27 on the Bund is the former headquarters of early opium traders Jardine Matheson, which went on to become one of the most powerful trading houses in Hong Kong and Shànghǎi.

Shílǐ Yíntān
Literally, 10 miles of silver beach, this is the most beautiful and the longest stretch of coastline in the area. Its where youll find the Maritime Silk Road Museum of Guǎngdōng.

Yǒngyòusì Pagoda
This wonderfully elegant 250-year-old pagoda soars above the fragments of its vanished temple in the northeast of the imperial summer resort of Bìshǔ Shānzhuāng (避暑山庄; Imperial Villa).

Xanadu Museum
Lánqí’s Xanadu Museum is worth visiting for the scale models that give a good impression of the sheer ambition of Shàngdū, as well as for relics from the site, including ceramics and statues.

Long Corridor
Perhaps the Summer Palaces premier sight, this corridor stretches for almost half a mile and is covered in 14,000 intricate paintings depicting scenes from Chinese history and myths.

Láishān Beach
This vast expanse of golden sand in the developing district 11km east of the old town attracts clam diggers and sunbathers alike. Get off at the Huánghǎi City Flower Garden (黄海城市花园) stop.

Yùhuáng Pavilion
The focal point of Guìdé’s old town is this small temple complex, built in 1592. It includes a three-storey pagoda, which can be climbed for good views, and a Confucius Temple (文庙, Wén Miào).

Fasting Palace
Once used by the emperor while he was abstaining from food and drink (and women) prior to the winter solstice ceremony, the dry moat around this attractive pavilion is now home to feral cats.

Ancient Pine Garden
In the middle of Shantang Jie is this courtyard complex known for its intricately carved beams. Look out for wooden impressions of officials, hats, phoenixes, flowers and other designs.

International Cemetery
Elly Kadoorie is buried at this historic international cemetery and theres a host of other foreign gravestones, including those of Jewish, Vietnamese and Western settlers of Shànghǎi.

Zhāng Fēi Temple
This temple is the tomb of local boy Zhang Fei, a respected general during the kingdom of Shu, who administered the kingdom from here. It’s on Xi Jie (西街), a continuation of Wumiao Jie (武庙街).

Tiānlóng
Well-preserved Túnpǔ village (屯堡), its settlements erected by Ming-dynasty garrison troops posted here during the reign of Hongwu to help quell local uprisings and consolidate control.
