Bamboo Sea
Bamboo forest where you can trek through the trees in almost total isolation. The paths get very slippery when wet and mosquitoes are everywhere, so come armed with repellent.

Zhànshān Temple
Within Zhōngshān Park is Qīngdǎos largest temple, Zhànshān Temple, an active Buddhist monastery. The temple has a number of dramatic sandalwood Buddhas covered in gold foil.

Phoenix Building
Sitting on a knoll in West Lake is Phoenix Building, with its bird-like shape, iron moongate, gourd-shaped ceiling openings, and quirky interior spaces formed by the fowl’s anatomy.

KS Lo Gallery
The KS Lo Gallery, in a building southeast of the Hong Kong parks tea-ware museum, contains rare Chinese ceramics and stone seals collected by the gallery’s eponymous benefactor.

Maruichi Drugstore
This site was disguised as a pharmacy that allowed the Japanese to carry out espionage activities in the 1930s. Its now a tiny national security museum. No English captions.

Qīngxū Guàn
Shānxī dust has penetrated every crevice of the 10 halls that make up this impressive Taoist temple. But that only adds to its ancient aura; it dates back to the Tang dynasty.

Chapel of St Michael
Set in the beautifully landscaped garden of the Cemetery of St Michael , this dainty chapel, built in 1875, has a green-and-white facade and baroque features in small proportions.

Zhōnghé Temple
Most travellers head first for Zhōnghé Temple, on the side of Zhōnghé Shān. At the temple, be careful of imposter monks passing out incense and then demanding ¥200 for a blessing.

Tsengmang Ling
From the east gate (gegyu shar ) follow the prayer wheels south to the Tsengmang Ling, once the monastery printing press, and look for the sacred stone in the centre of the chapel.

Shuba Ancient Fort
These half-ruined towers, known as the Shuba Ancient Fort, stands on the main highway, 7km east of Bahel. They are said to date from the reign of Songtsen Gampo (r 630–49).

Rénshòu Temple
This former Ming monastery remains an active place of worship today. Inside, you’ll find a pagoda built in 1656, and the Fóshān Folk Arts Studio , featuring pretty paper-cut art.

Bǐngzhōngluò Village
Isolated (close to both Tibet and Myanmar), friendly village set in a beautiful, wide and fertile bowl. It makes a great base for hikes into the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Bǎolún Sì
One the last remaining of Ciqikous five temples (another now serves as a primary school). The magnificent main building dates back 1000 years to the Northern Song dynasty.

ShanghART
The 1920s twin villas and garden (formerly the residence of a Shanghai middleman or comprador ) houses a gorgeous new branch of Shanghai’s most established contemporary art gallery.

Qīngbì Stream
From Zhōnghé Temple it’s a nice 11km walk south to Gǎntōng Temple, Qīngbì Stream and/or Guānyīn Pavilion, from where you can continue to the road and pick up a Dàlǐ-bound bus.

Misty Rain Tower
The double-storey Misty Rain Tower, on the northwestern side of the main lake at the summer resort of Bìshǔ Shānzhuāng (避暑山庄; Imperial Villa), served as an imperial study.

Hāmì Museum
Across from the Hāmì Kings Mausoleum, this mildly interesting museum spotlights mummies and dinosaurs found in the region, including a cool fossilised nest of dinosaur eggs.

Duān Gate
Sandwiched between the Gate of Heavenly Peace and Meridian Gate, Duān Gate was stripped of its treasures by foreign forces quelling the Boxer Rebellion (according to the blurb).

Echo Wall
One of the Temple of Heaven Parks most popular sights, thanks to its unique acoustic properties which allow a whisper at one end of the 65m wall to be heard at the other end.
