Old Stanley Police Station
The most interesting building in the village itself is this two-storey structure from 1859. It now contains, less interestingly, a Wellcome supermarket.

Hongkew Methodist Church
Dating from 1923, this is the church where Chiang Kaishek married Soong Meiling. It’s generally closed to the public, but the caretaker may let you in.

Debating Courtyard
Southeast of the Gomde Khang residence is the debating courtyard. You should be able to hear the clapping of hands as you pass if there is a debate in progress.

Former German Consulate Building
Across the street from the Former British Consultate Building, next to Yínruì Hotel (银瑞大酒店), is this charming two-storey yellow structure built in 1905.

Organ Museum
Housed in the highly distinctive Bāguà Lóu (八卦楼) building is the Organ Museum, with a fantastic collection including a Norman & Beard organ from 1909.

Aydingkul Lake
This is the second-lowest lake in the world and the hottest place in China. The lake has dried in recent decades and now is mostly a muddy, salt-encrusted flat.

Zhang Ancestral Hall
The highlight of the village, the hall is surrounded by 23 elaborately carved spear-like stones which celebrate the achievements of prominent villagers.

Shǎnxī Mosque
South of the Peoples Sq is the Uighur Old Town and the 260-year-old Shǎnxī Mosque, as well as workshops making traditional-style leather Uighur boots.

Xu Guangqi Memorial Hall
The memorial hall, within a historic Ming dynasty building in Guangqi Park, is dedicated to the 17th century Shànghǎi Christian and scientist Xu Guangqi.

Wooden Pagoda
In the town’s main square stands this brick and wooden structure. Though first built in AD 528, the present structure is a thorough reconstruction from 1926.

Pavilion of Cheerful Melodies
A three-storey wooden opera house, which was the Forbidden City’s largest theatre. Note the trap doors that allowed actors to make dramatic stage entrances.

Bruce Lee Club
Founded by Bruce Lee’s fans, this mini-museum and souvenir shop has action figures, toys, movie products and other memorabilia related to the kung-fu icon.

Duōbǎo Pagoda
The oldest structure on the island, the attractive five-storey stone Duōbǎo Pagoda – its name literally means the Many Treasures Pagoda – was built in 1334.

City Tower
Snap a photo before passing under the tallest building in the old town en route to other sites. Sadly, you can no longer climb its stone steps for city views.

Dàlǐ Museum
The museum houses a small collection of archaeological pieces relating to Bai history, including some fine figurines. English descriptions are lacking.

Cloud Dispelling Hall
Empress Cixi sometimes used this hall as her sleeping quarters. It was originally constructed by Emperor Qianlong as a gift for his mothers 60th birthday.

Shèng Xī Fú Hat Museum
This branch of the famous Shèng Xī Fú Hat Store has a quirky, free-to-visit hat museum out the back, detailing the history of the company and of hats in China.

Zhambhala Lhakhang
This small chapel on the western side of the Meru Nyingba monastery has a central image of Marmedze (Dipamkara), the Past Buddha, and a small inner kora path.

South Gate
For bird’s-eye views of the town’s rooftops and lanes, climb to the top of South Gate, a 2010 rebuild on Nan Jie, a street running parallel to Dadong Jie.

Mosque Dedicated to the Prophet
The original building is believed to be founded here in 627 by Abu Waqas, an uncle of the prophet Mohammed. The present mosque dates from the Qing dynasty.
