Zhùangjīn Tǒng
The world’s biggest prayer wheel standing at 21m high and containing 100,000 small prayer wheels. At least six people are needed to make it spin.

Shang City Walls
Zhèngzhōus eastern outskirts are marked by long, high mounds of earth, the remains of the old city walls, which can be clambered upon for walks.

Jíqìng Lóu
This 600-year-old tǔlóu (earthen structure) was built without using a single nail and is still pretty intact. It now houses an exhibition hall.

Golden Stupa Temple
This small temple was named after a long-destroyed golden chörten (Tibetan stupa). Its now used as a place of study by monks from Kumbum Monastery .

Chusi (Tsetsep) Nunnery
This 17th-century nunnery was largely left in ruins after the Cultural Revolution but has since been rebuilt and is now home to about 14 nuns.

Bùyún Lóu
At the heart of the Tiánluókēng cluster is this square building. First built in the 17th century, it burnt down in 1936 and was rebuilt in the 1950s.

Jiaba Gompa
This gompa in the centre of Sharda is where Tibetans, young and old, appear each morning to turn prayer wheels and circumambulate the temple.

City God Temple
Moved here in 1769 from its original location in Xuějiābāng, this temple stands on the west side of the recently built City God Temple bridge.

Church of Our Lady of Carmel
Built in 1885, this pretty church stands on a hill overlooking the harbour, scenic Taipa village and the pastel-coloured Taipa Houses-Museum.

Tàipíng Hill
Rising up on the northeast side of Zhōngshān Park , Tàipíng Hill hosts Qīngdǎo TV Tower at its summit, connected to the base by a scenic cable car .

Toghraklek Manor
Cherchen’s main sight is this fine example of early-20th-century Kashgarian architecture, built in 1911 for a local warlord. It’s 2.5km west of town.

Tiānjīn Eye
To get the city’s transformation in perspective, or for a night-time angle on Tiānjīn, ride this huge Ferris wheel which straddles the Hǎi River.

White King Town
Famed as the site where the King of Shu, Liu Bei, entrusted his son and kingdom to Zhu Geliang, as chronicled in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms .

Dromochen Lhakhang
A small chapel commemorates the birthplace of Nubchen Sangye Yeshe, a 9th-century Tantric master who was one of the 25 disciples of Guru Rinpoche.

Chinese University of Hong Kong
It’s well worth making time to see the art museum here, established in 1963, which is in Ma Liu Shui and served by University MTR East Rail station.

Jiāyùguān Museum of the Great Wall
An excellent museum with photos, artefacts, maps, Silk Road exhibits and models to show just how the fort and Great Wall of China crossed the land.

Zhōnglù
Comparatively remote Zhōnglù is a popular village for homestays, and a good base for wandering through the countryside. Its 13km from town. Take a taxi (¥80).

Silver Beach
A long stretch of silvery-yellow sand with apparently clean water, about 8km south of the city centre. Take bus 3 (¥1.50) from the central bus station.

Relic Hall of Mao Zedong
This relatively modern museum includes everyday artefacts used by Mao, clothing he wore, plus more photos from his life, and also has good English captions.

Qūyuàn Garden
On the northwest shore of West Lake, this lovely collection of gardens spreads out over numerous islets and is renowned for its fragrant spring lotus blossoms.
