Tree-shaded and dotted with lakes, leafy Lièshì Park is very popular in the mornings for singing, dancing and taichi.

On the eastern side of Tàipíng Cape in Bādàguān is this cove with dedicated swim lanes, paddle boats and gentle waves.

Cháoyáng Cave
The sound of the roaring waves in this cave overlooking the sea is said to imitate the chanting of the Buddha.

Shek O beach has a large expanse of sand, shady trees to the rear, showers, changing facilities and lockers for rent.

Built in 1906, this mosque is no longer operating and is closed to visitors, but you can take a peek from the outside.

‘Lotus’ is a pretty Buddhist temple with an octagonal front, a boulder jutting into its rear, and elaborate frescos.

This large, still-active temple was heavily damaged during the Cultural Revolution, but contains some notable statuary.

Buses from Tángkǒu stop at this temple at the mountains foot and the beginning of the climb for most visitors.

Has detailed explanations of Lónghǔ Shān’s formation. There is a dinosaur-themed 4D-cinema above the ticket office.

Sampeling Monastery
This golden-roofed monastery at the top end of town commands fine views of the surrounding hills. No photos allowed.

Húběi Museum of Art
Located by enormous East Lake, this impressive art museum stages regular worthwhile exhibitions. Take bus 402 or 411.

Festival Thangka Wall
Giant thangkas are displayed here during Shigatses major Buddhist festivals. The views over Tashilunpo are wonderful.

Bājiǎo
A 2000-year-old Han-dynasty village with remarkable 12-sided walls that still shelter a small living community.

Kāngxī Overpass
This ancient bridge is one of the earliest examples in the world of such a traffic structure and dates from 1671.

Èrdào Bridge
About 5km north of Kāngdìng, these springs are a pleasant 45-minute walk along the Yǎlā River, or take a cab (Y8).

Flying Rock
The western steps descent begins at the Flying Rock, a boulder perched on an outcrop half an hour from Běihǎi Hotel.

Just south of the Jampa Ling is a chörten that pilgrims circumambulate and a sacred tree to which pilgrims tie stones.

Located in the north of town off Jingbei Lu, the name of this intriguing temple translates as the Iron Girl Temple.

A shuttered building (四望楼; Sìwàng Lóu) in West Lake, designed in a period style reminiscent of 1970s kung fu movies.
