Youre right on the border with Myanmar here, but the attractions – Kayan women in brass neck rings – are tacky and unsavoury.

There are some 136 nuns resident at Chupsang and it’s a very friendly place. Visit it as part of a walk from Pabonka Monastery.

The Moorish-looking Kong Residence , built in 1924, is a former Kuomintang residence on the Duolun Road Cultural Street.

Zǐxiá Lake
A tree-lined pathway winds around pavilions and picnic grounds in the Míng Xiàolíng Scenic Area and ends at this scenic lake.

Yíjīng Lóu
The largest rectangular tǔlóu in Fújiàn. The crumbling structure has 281 rooms, two schools and 51 halls. Built in 1851.

The Moore Memorial Church , designed by Ladislaus Hudec, is the standout red-brick Christian edifice east of People’s Square.

Mèngjiāngnǚ Temple
A well-known Song-Ming reconstruction, Mèngjiāngnǚ Temple is 6km east of Shānhǎiguān. A taxi here should cost around Y12.

Great Treasure Temple
Another 10km past the hot spring at Tiānshēng Bridge is the Great Treasure Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Yúnnán.

The house is empty and theres nothing to see. Mao reputedly spent the night here, but in fact he only had an afternoon nap.
