Nandi Statue
At the east end of Hampi Bazaar is a Nandi statue, around which stand some of the colonnaded blocks of the ancient marketplace. This is the main location for Vijaya Utsav , the Hampi arts festival held in November.

Museum of Kangra Art
This museum, just off the main street, displays some fine miniature paintings from the Kangra school, and Chamba rumal embroideries, along with traditional costumes and photos from the devastating 1905 Kangra earthquake.

Mt Abu Wildlife Sanctuary
This 290-sq-km sanctuary , 5.5km northeast of Mt Abu, on a large plateau, is home to leopards, deer, foxes and bears. It’s about a 3km walk from the Dilwara temples. Contact Mt Abu Treks to arrange an overnight stay.

Maney Tsermo
Maney Tsermo is a group of stupas sitting rather forgotten on the rise leading up towards the palace from the Polo Ground. Like many such places its fun place to ponder but beware of the numerous dogs around here.

Dhirdham Mandir
Darjeelings most conspicuous Hindu temple is a replica of the famous Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. It’s easy to find – just below the Darjeeling train station. There’s a good view over Darjeeling from its grounds.

Chowkhang Gompa
Hidden in a large courtyard behind Main Bazaar, the small, 20th-century Chowkhang Gompa has a gilt-roofed prayer room strung with hundreds of prayer flags. It’s the headquarters of the Ladakh Buddhist Association.

Adyar Library
The Adyar Library at the Theosophical Society in Adyar has a huge collection of books on religion and philosophy, some of which are on display, from 1000-year-old Buddhist scrolls to intricate, handmade 19th-century Bibles.

Old Customs Post
A relic of Calangute’s past can be found at the old customs post, at the market crossroads. Several of these posts were built during Portuguese rule to monitor the coming and going of goods, and to deter smuggling.

Nagoa Beach
Nagoa Beach, on the south coast of the island 7km west of Diu town, is long, palm-fringed and safe for swimming – but trash-strewn and very busy, often with drunk men: foreign women receive a lot of unwanted attention.

Brahmani Mata Temple
For the best valley views, hike 3km up from the Chaurasi gate to the shabby but panoramic Brahmani Mata Temple above town. The route passes through the upper village, still full of traditional slate-roofed, wooden houses.

Birla Industrial & Technological Museum
Kolkata has excellent hands-on places to really experience practical science. The Birla Industrial & Technological Museum. has loads of buttons to press and levers to pull, though some older galleries need repairing.

Beach 1
Beach 1 is a long sweep of sandy beach and mangrove, a 40-minute walk west of the jetty and village. There’s a good sunset viewpoint out this way accessed via Pearl Park Beach Resort . Dugongs are sometime spotted here.

Ratan Singh Palace
While Padminis Palace was the summer abode of the Chittor royals, the winter palace takes the name of her husband, Rattan Singh. It overlooks a small lake and, although run down, is an interesting place to explore.

Undying Banyan Tree
Outside the Patalpuri temple - though its roots can be seen beneath ground - is the Undying Banyan Tree from which pilgrims used to leap to their deaths, believing it would liberate them from the cycle of rebirth.

Thiksey Gompa museum
The museum is hidden away beneath the monastery restaurant. Displays include well-labelled Tantric artefacts including a wine-vessel made from a human skull. Notice the 10 weapons symbolically used to combat evil spirits.

VK Salvi
Patan is famous for its beautiful Patola silk saris produced in a torturously laborious process. Threads are painstakingly tie-dyed to create the pattern before the weaving process begins. To see them made, visit VK Salvi .

Pir Dastgir Sahib
This large Sufi shrine had an interior that was colourfully faceted with some very beautiful papier-mâché work until ravaged by fire in 2012. Reconstruction is well underway but the inner walls are as yet uncoloured.

Madurai Government Museum
Inside this museum is a neglected collection of archaeological finds, sculpture, bronzes, costumes and paintings. A shady children’s park with pay-as-you-go rides and slides is alongside the museums’ entrance driveway.

Santa Cruz Basilica
The imposing Catholic basilica was originally built on this site in 1506, though the current building dates to 1902. Inside you’ll find artefacts from the different eras in Kochi and a striking pastel-coloured interior.

Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary
Southern Tripura’s best known sights can be combined into a long day trip from Agartala. All transport passes the gates of Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary , a local picnic and boating spot famous for its spectacled monkeys.
