Shri Chitra Art Gallery
Inside the grounds of the zoo itself, this gallery has paintings by the Rajput, Mughal and Tanjore schools, and portraits by renowned artist Ravi Varma (1848-1906) in the European style.

Vizhinjam Lighthouse
Kovalams most distinguishing feature is the working candy-striped lighthouse at the southern end of the beach. Climb the spiral staircase for vertigo-inducing views up and down the coast.

Prabhas Patan Museum
This museum, 300m north of the Somnath temple, is laid out in courtyard-centred rooms and contains remains of the previous temples, some intricately carved, though many are very weathered.

Nehru Ghat
Around the corner from Sangam (skirt the riverbank around the front of Akbar’s Fort) are the Saraswati and Nehru Ghats , home to a nightly aarti (an auspicious lighting of lamps/candles).

Thai Temple
The impressive Thai Temple has a brightly coloured wat with gold leaf shimmering from its arched rooftop and manicured gardens. Meditation sessions are held here mornings and evenings.

Shanti Nath
Shanti Nath, built about a century ago, houses components from older temples, including a 4.5m-high Adinath statue with a plastered-over inscription on the pedestal dating to about 1027.

Ghoghla Beach
The best beach is Ghoghla Beach, north of Diu. A long stretch of sand, it’s got less trash and fewer people than the others, along with gentle waves and some decent restaurants behind it.

Dwarkanath Temple
This Temple is dedicated to Krishna and has a magnificent, five-storey spire that is supported by 60 columns. To enter, non-Hindus must make a declaration of respect for the religion.

Donkey Sanctuary
Donkeys rescued from mistreatment or end-of-career abandonment retire to this semi-rural sanctuary . Bringing them carrots is a great excuse to wander around lovely, little visited upper Leh.

Desert National Park
The Desert National Park has been established in the Great Thar Desert near Sam village. One of the most popular excursions is to the sand dunes on the edge of the park, 42km from Jaisalmer.

Chamba Gompa
The Chamba Gompa has spectacularly restored mural work covering walls and ceilings around a cartoon-like two-storey statue of Maitreya, whose expression embodies the spirit of detachment.

Cultural Institut de Chandernagar
You can visit an 18th-century mansion now housing the Cultural Institut de Chandarnagar at the former French outpost of Chandarnagar . It has collections documenting this colonial outpost.

Bhimbetka Rock Shelters
Secreted in a forest of teak and sal in craggy cliffs 46km south of Bhopal are more than 700 rock shelters . Around 500 of them contain some of the world’s oldest pre-historic paintings.

Batal is the starting point for treks to nearby Bara Shigri, one of the longest glaciers in the Himalaya, but the route is treacherous and it’s essential to travel with an experienced guide.

The Hazarduari is a palace famous for its 1000 doors (real and false), built here for the nawabs in 1837. It houses an astonishing collection of antiquities from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Limestone Caves
Morth of Port Blair are the limestone caves at Baratang. It’s a 45-minute boat trip (₹450) from the jetty, a scenic trip through mangrove forest. A permit is required, organised at the jetty.

Champa Baodi
So-called because its water supposedly smelled as sweet as the champak flower, Champa Baodi is a step-well surrounded by subterranean vaulted chambers, some of which you can explore.

Vashnu Mata Temple
Drop into the awesomely kitsch Vashnu Mata Temple, 200m up from the main road, where you access the inner grotto through a concrete lions mouth and emerge via the jaws of a crocodile.

Vechaar Utensil Museum
At Vishalla restaurant, opposite Vasna Tol Naka, this museum displays the graceful practicality of pots and utensils, with more than 4500 items from all over India, some 1000 years old.
