Kerala Folklore Academy
At this training academy near Chirakkal Pond Valapattanam, about 6km north of Kannur, you can see vibrantly coloured folklore costumes up close and sometimes catch a performance.

Friendship Gate
This colourful if somewhat garish gateway marks the entrance to the central area of Leh and can make a photogenic foreground to photos of Stok Kangri and the mountain horizon.

Bahu Begum Ka Maquabara
In Faizabad, the Bahu Begum ka Maquabara is the Begum’s unique mausoleum. It has three domes built above each other with wonderfully ornate decoration on the walls and ceilings.

Jata Shankar
This cave temple is in a beautiful gorge about 2.5km along a good track that’s signed just north of the town limits. The small Shiva shrine is hidden under a huge overhanging rock.

Indira Gandhi Statue
This statue of Indias first (and so far only) female prime minister is one of many around the Maidan to occupy plinths vacated by former colonial figures after independence.

Saraswati Ghat
Around the corner from Sangam (skirt the riverbank around the front of Akbar’s Fort) are the Saraswati and Nehru Ghats , home to a nightly aarti (an auspicious lighting of lamps/candles).

Payyambalam Beach
Kannurs 4km-long main beach can be accessed via a small park near the military cantonment. It gets busy in the evening when families and couples come down to watch the sunset and picnic.

Moti Dungri
To the south, looming above J Nehru Rd, is this small, romantic fort. It has served as a prison, but today remains in the possession of the former royal family, and entry is prohibited.

Kali Bari Mandir
The Bengali-hut-style Kali Bari Mandir, on the hillside above the Mall, 500m west of Scandal Point, enshrines an image of Kali as Shyamala. There are good views over Shimla from here.

Man Mandir Ghat
Just north of Dashashwamedh Ghat, Man Mandir Ghat was built in 1600 by Raja Man Singh, but was poorly restored in the 19th century. The northern corner of the ghat has a fine stone balcony.

Chettiar Park
Chettiar Park is about 1.5km uphill from town on the way to the Kurinji Andavar Temple. It is small, pretty and landscaped. It gets crowded with school groups and canoodling couples.

Chhattar Bilas Gardens
Just north of Kishore Sagar, next to the tourist office, these gardens contain the Kshar Bagh , a collection of overgrown but impressive royal cenotaphs interspersed with carved elephants.

Bison Lodge
Captain Forsyth named Bison Lodge after a herd of ‘bison’ (gaur) he spotted here. It’s now an old-fashioned, dilapidated museum focusing on the history, flora and fauna of the Satpura region.

Ambootia Tea Estate
Along Pankhabari Rd, the lushly overgrown old graveyard at St Andrews has poignant reminders of the tea-planter era. The organic Ambootia Tea Estate welcomes visitors to its aromatic factory.

St Philomena’s Cathedral
The beauty of towering St Philomena’s Cathedral, built between 1933 and 1941 in neo-Gothic style, is emphasised by beautiful stained-glass windows. It’s on the northern outskirts of town.

Jaldhapara Wildlife Sanctuary
This rarely visited sanctuary protects 114 sq km of lush forests and grasslands along the Torsa River and is a refuge for more than 50 Indian one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis).

Samidheshwar Temple
The Samidheshwar Temple, built in the 6th century and restored in 1427, is close to the Mahasati area. Notable among its intricate carving is a Trimurti (three-faced) figure of Shiva.
