Kudus is a massive centre of kretek production – there are said to be 25 factories in the town. Djarum, which started in 1951, is the main employer and third-biggest kretek manufacturer in Indonesia. Tours of its modern factory leave at 9am Monday to Friday and are free of charge. It’s incredible to see the women rollers at work, a blur of hand and eye coordination.
