Midtown Garden
Part of the public space surrounding the Tokyo Midtown development. Some 140 cherry, camphor and other trees that were on the former Self Defence Agency site here were transplanted into the park.

Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum
The Ryūhyō-kan sits atop a hill with great viewing platforms, interesting displays and the tiny kurione (sea angel), a funky relative of the sea slug that has become the de-facto Abashiri mascot.

Melon Auction
Attending the melon auction in the Vegetable and Fruits Wholesale Market section of the inner market of Tsukiji Market is far less fuss than the tuna auction; just turn up and watch from around 9am.

Prada
Of course you could shop here, but you can also ogle the gorgeous, convex glass bubbles of the exterior. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, this is one of Aoyamas sexier organic-looking structures.

Takamatsuzuka
Located in a pleasant wooded park, this ancient tomb looks like a grassy mound. The kofuns interior is closed to the public, but a hall next door shows painstaking reproductions of the murals inside.

Mohri Garden
As part of the redevelopment of this area of Roppongi into the vast Roppongi Hills complex, this traditional-style garden, centred around a pond, was created. Its a pleasant spot for a stroll.

Shuzen
You can wander the pleasant temple grounds for free but theres a fee if you wish to see inside its small treasure museum which contains ancient carved buddhas and other religious works of art.

Italian Embassy Villa Memorial Park
The former summer residence of Italys ambassadors (from 1928 to 1997) has a pleasant sun terrace with excellent views across Chūzen-ji lake. Walking here from the bus station takes around 25 minutes.

Kawayu Eco
This museum and visitors centre in Kawayu Onsen has impressive displays, handy hiking maps and helpful staff. Check out how the volcanic landscape was formed. A number of short nature trails start here.

JR Tower
The 38-floor JR Tower (173m) offers the best views of Sapporo. Its easy, all indoor, and there are shopping, eating and drinking options galore in the huge complex that surrounds JR Sapporo Station.

Hōmotsu
The first notable landmark on the long climb at Konpira-san is Ō-mon, a stone gateway that leads to Hōmotsu-kan, where the collection of treasures is pretty underwhelming for such a major shrine.

Gallery Kura
Tucked away amid the new Sola City development is this exhibition space occupying a relocated 1917 storehouse once used by the areas book distributors. Various art shows and events are held here.

Karasujima Observation Point
South of the visitors centre is this observation point, where the 1914 lava flow engulfed a small island that had once been 500m offshore. Theres now an ashi-yu (footbath), Japans second longest.

Ishikawa Prefectural Art Museum
All the local specialties are covered here with an emphasis on Kutani porcelain, Japanese painting and Kaga yūzen (silk-dyed) fabrics and costumes. Admission prices vary during special exhibitions.

Naramachi Kōshi
This well-preserved merchants house is an excellent place to observe architectural details: beamed ceilings, old kitchen, tansu stairs and inner garden. Follow signs to Naramachi Lattice House.

Misaki Branch School
Worth visiting in Tanoura is this perfectly preserved 1902 school, setting for the Twenty-Four Eyes story and the 1954 film. Its a short walk from the movie village on the road back to Sakate.

Hiroshima Museum of Art
In an interesting 1970s building, this museum has a decent collection of minor works by well-known painters, including Picasso, Gauguin, Monet and Van Gogh, and Western-style Japanese paintings.

Goro Sky Tower
The inspirational views at the Goro Sky Tower, about 6.5km from Nishi-Maizuru Station by car, have been voted among Kansais best. You dont even need to pay admission for dramatic coastline views.

Floating Nō Stage
On one side of Itsukushima-jinja is a floating nō stage, built by local lord Asano Tsunanaga in 1680 and still used for nō (stylised dance-drama) performances in Miyajima every year from 16 to 18 April.

White Snake Viewing Facility
While in Iwakuni, reptile enthusiasts, or those with kids in tow, might want to pop into the small viewing facility, where several of the bizarre albino snakes unique to the area are on display.
