This building looks like a contemporary Japanese ‘house’ but done in traditional lines so it has a classical feeling – yet it’s a Japanese restaurant and very subtle and understated.

Sendai City Museum
The city museum offers a comprehensive account of samurai Masamunes epic life, as well as more than 13,000 artefacts on loan from the Date family with plenty of explanations in English.

Sanseiganto
Next to the Shintō shrine Nachi Taisha, is the fine old temple Sanseiganto-ji; the gong above the offering box in the main hall is the largest in Japan, a gift from Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Shōrin
This temple is worth a look, even if only through its admission gate, to admire the thatched roof of the main hall. It’s a good option if you’re trying to avoid crowds. It’s near Sanzen-in.

Haisha
A highlight of the Art House Project collection of sites is Ōtake Shinrōs shacklike Haisha , notable for its Statue of Liberty sculpture, which rises up through the levels of the house.

Hakodate Museum of Northern Peoples
The Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples is a recommended place to learn about the Ainu and their culture. The exhibits are immaculate and English signage has been added to some.

Furano Winery
About 4km northwest of JR Furano station and overlooking the valley, its almost obligatory to visit this winery, check out the wine-making process and indulge in a complimentary tipple.

Fukushū
Garden fans should take a stroll through Chinese-style Fukushū-en. All materials were brought from Fuzhou, Nahas sister city in China, including the pagoda that sits atop a small waterfall.

Asahi Shimbun
Reserve in advance for free tours with an English-speaking guide of the Tokyo-headquarters of this national newspaper. Tours are offered free Monday to Friday at 10.45am and 12.45pm.

Marugame Genichiro
Right outside the station is Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, showcasing two- and three-dimensional work of its eponymous artist, as well as rotating exhibitions.

Yuzuya Honten
This is Hagis own beer and citrus-juice factory where you can stop in to see the very small team at work, taste juice in the attached shop, or have a refreshing mikan -flavoured (satsuma) soft cream.

Sky Promenade
On levels 44 to 46 of Midland Square Sky Promenade features Japans tallest open-air observation deck and a handful of high altitude, high priced eats. Reach them via adventurously lit passageways.

Taiko Drum Museum
There are hundreds of drums from around the world here, including several traditional Japanese taiko . The best part is that you can actually play most of them (those marked with a music note).

Tōno Municipal Museum
Revamped in 2014, with even more exhibits depicting some of Tōnos famous legends, this museum provides a good measure of background information and context for whats to come in the valley beyond.

Tempogama
Tempogama is a large kiln ruin, c 1832, a short walk up a lane leading off the main street of shops and galleries in Imbe. The kiln is fenced off for protection. Look for the red iron roofing.

Hokkaidō Museum of Northern Peoples
The Hoppō-minzoku Hakubutsukan, southwest of town, is dedicated to northern cultures. A state-of-the-art place, it has numerous exhibits on Ainu, Native American, Aleutian and other indigenous cultures.

Aragami Jinja
Youll need to ask a local to take you or direct you to this insanely photogenic little shrine in the middle of a lumious yellow field of canola. If youre a shutterbug, its worth the treasure hunt.

Ainu Culture Promotion Centre
Sapporo citys excellent Ainu Culture Promotion Centre is in Kogane-yu, 3km east of Jōzankei. The whole place is very well done and visitors can touch and hold exhibits in the exhibition hall.

Gokoku
Declared an important cultural property, Gokoku Temple gets surprisingly few visitors. One of the few surviving Edo temples, it dates from 1680 and was built by the fifth Tokugawa shōgun for his mother.
