While youre at the castle, visit the Irino-Azana, a viewpoint about 200m west of the Seiden that affords great views over Naha and as far as the Kerama Islands.

Enoshima
On Enoshima Island, a popular date spot on the Shōnan Coast, a narrow cobblestone lane (or the escalator if you prefer) leads to this shrine to the sea goddess Benzaiten.

Hirado
Hirado-jō presides over the town, with an enormous number of rebuilt structures. Inside youll see traditional armour and clothing, and photos and models of old Hirado.

Jikkō
Only about 50m north of Sanzen-in, this small temple is often praised for its lovely garden and fudan-zakura cherry tree, which blossoms between October and March.

Musashi Mitake
Atop Mt Mitake is this attractive Shintō shrine and pilgrimage site said to date back some 1200 years. The site commands stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Miyajima History & Folklore Museum
Set in a fine garden, this museum combines a 19th-century merchant house with exhibitions on trade in the Edo period, as well as displays connected with the island.

Merchant Houses
North of Sanmachi are two excellent examples of Edo-period merchants homes, with the living quarters in one section and the commercial/warehouse areas in another.

Ōmori Wa
Here at Uchikos last remaining candle manufacturer the candles are still made by hand, according to traditional methods, and you can watch the candle-makers at work.

Gokayama Minzoku
You can see items from traditional life and displays illustrating traditional gunpowder production, for which the area was famed, at this folklore museum in Suganuma.

Former Hosokawa Gyōbutei
North of the castle, down paths of immaculately raked gravel, is the large villa and garden built for the Hosokawa clan. Inside are displays of furniture and art pieces.

Tōgō
This Shintō shrine honours the Marquis Tōgō, who as navy admiral won a decisive battle in the Russo-Japanese war. Its also a popular setting for traditional weddings.

Tourist Pavilion
Halfway down Omote-sandō, this museum has local-history exhibits, as well as some of the floats used in the Narita Gion Matsuri (the towns major festival) on display.

Nagara River Ukai Museum
Newly opened in 2012 this shiny museum is the only one of its kind and features exhibits on everything you could possibly want to know about cormorant fishing in Japan.

Flame of Peace
The Flame of Peace is a feature of the pond in Hiroshimas Peace Memorial Park. The flame will be extinguished only once every nuclear weapon on earth has been destroyed.

The ground-floor Christian museum in the St Francis Xavier Memorial Church covers the life of Xavier and early history of Christianity in Japan, mostly in Japanese only.

Ayamihabiru
Displays on Yonagunis giant Atlas moths, which have a wingspan of 25cm to 30cm and are affectionately known as Yonaguni-san, can be seen here, about 1km south of Sonai.

Kōchi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden
On the south side of Godaisan-kōen east of the city centre are the Kōchi Prefectural Makino Botanical Gardens, which feature more than 3000 different plant species.

Kōmyōzen
Secreted away on the southern edge of Dazaifu, this small temple has an exquisite jewel of a Zen garden. Its a peaceful contrast to the crowds at the nearby shrine.

Across town, nestled among rice paddies and reachable by bus (¥100), Kaidan-in dates from 761 and was one of the most important Buddhist ordination monasteries in Japan.

The futuristic Kitakyūshū Innovation Gallery & Studio offers changing special exhibits (varies, often ¥500) and an excellent chronology of technological innovation.
