Sado Former Magistrates Office
Formerly the centre of island government under the Tokugawa shogunate (in the Edo period), these beautifully reconstructed buildings and grounds look the part.

Rakan
An interesting shrine that is known as part of neighbouring Gohyakurakan, which contains 500 statues that were built to memorialise fallen silver-mine workers.

Momiji
Momiji means maple, and their leaves come alive in autumn here in this pretty park along the river. Its at the foot of Misen, close to the ropeway station.

Matsumoto City Museum
The castle grounds (and your admission ticket) also include the Matsumoto City Museum, with its small displays relating to the regions history and folklore.

Kurodani Temple
This temple in the Northern Higashiyama district is a favourite of locals for morning and evening strolls. Its got some truly lovely halls and a fine pond.

Kokusen Awamori
If you want to sample Hanazake, the islands infamous local brew, head to Kokusen Awamori, which is located in Sonai and offers free tastings and sales on-site.

Kairyū
On Shiraishi-jima, this temple associated with Buddhist saint Kōbō Daishi incorporates a trail of small shrines leading to a huge boulder on top of the hill.

Imbe
This understated, pretty wooden shrine sits among the trees and bamboo groves of the hills behind the ceramic-producing town of Imbe, in the Bizen region.

Higashi Iya History & Folk Museum
This folk museum is in a large red building in Kyōjō, displaying historic artefacts and daily-use tools, as well as items relating to the Heike legend.

Umi Museum of Contemporary Art
This light-filled gallery showcases an impressive collection of contemporary works by Japanese artists who have found fame abroad. Its in a lovely forested spot.

Old English Consulate
From 1913 to 1934, this whitewashed mansion served as the British consulate. Today its primarily used as a tea salon for sightseers in need of some afternoon respite.

Miyazaki Prefectural Museum of Nature & History
Just north of Miyazaki-jingū, Miyazaki Prefectural Museum of Nature & History exhibits items on local history, archaeology, festival artefacts and folkcrafts.

Mollusc Mugi Shell Museum
A mollusc-shaped structure on an idyllic beach – inside, theres an impressive collection of shells, as well as live tropical specimens including moray eels and nautilus.

Honmaru Palace
The 2008 reconstruction of the Honmaru Palace (Honmaru Goten) fairly gleams with fresh wood and gold leaf paintings, particularly in the Sho-kun-no-ma receiving room.

Ōsugi
Named for the sugi (cryptomeria) trees that surround it, this fine little shrine is a nice place to gather your thoughts after climbing to the summit of this ridge.

Ōsanbashi International Passenger Terminal
Just to the west of Yamashita-kōen, this sleek, award-winning pier, has an attractive roof deck where you can sit on the lawn or benches to take in the harbour views.

Akarenga Sōkō
Akarenga Sōkō means red-brick warehouse, and these attractive century-old structures have been refurbished into boutiques, restaurants, cafes and event spaces.

Among the most well known of Saijōs sake breweries, Kamotsuru is worth a look as it has a large tasting room, where you can also view a video about the district.
