For art enthusiasts, the Bermuda National Gallery is a must-see when you visit the island. Located next to Victoria Park in Hamilton, it was first created in 1989 when local collector Hereward T. Watlington left his private collection of European art to the people of Bermuda with the stipulation that it be housed in a facility that meets the same standards as the Metropolitan Museum of New York. Today, the National Gallery not only houses Watlington’s bequest—with works by artists like Gainsborough and Reynolds, as well as art created by Watlington himself—but also an African Collection and a Bermuda Collection with works dating back to 1680.
