Chiesa di Sant’Anna
Largely destroyed during WWII and painstakingly rebuilt afterwards, this sand-coloured church is basically baroque, but the Ionic columns give it a neoclassical edge. It was undergoing restoration at the time of research.

Dug into the Idris rock, this church has an unprepossessing facade, but the narrow corridor communicating with the recessed church of San Giovanni in Monterrone is richly decorated with 12th- to 17th-century frescoes.

Chiesa di Santa Margherita dAntiochia
The waterfront is framed by a small Gothic-Ligurian church, built in 1318 after a murky legend about the bones of St Margaret being found in a wooden box on a nearby beach. It is notable for its 40m-tall octagonal tower.

The Fontana dellAmenano at the entrance of the Piazza del Duomo food market is Tito Angelinis commemoration of the River Amenano, which once ran overground and on whose banks the Greeks founded the city of Katane.

Civico Museo Teatrale Carlo Schmidl
Triestes long-standing cultural cred is documented at this museum, housed inside the grand Palazzo Gopcevich, with a collection that traces the citys rich musical and theatrical heritage from the 18th century onwards.

Chiesa Matrice di San Giorgio
In town, the 16th-century Chiesa Matrice di San Giorgio, with its dressed-up Madonnas, houses the tomb of Joachim Murat, the French-born former king of Naples, brother-in-law of Napoleon and well-known European dandy.

Chiesa di SantIgnazio
Across from the Museo del Satiro, this early 18th-century church collapsed in the 1930s, but its roofless remains make a photogenic detour, with their circular colonnade of twin columns backed by a vine-draped stone wall.

Basilica di SantEufemia
Grados beautiful historic core is dominated by this lovely Romanesque basilica, dating back to AD 579; the adjoining lapidary contains 4th- to 5th-century mosaics as well as some 3rd-century Roman sarcophagi facades.

Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore
Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore, a 14th-century monastery, is still a retreat for around 40 monks. Frescoes by Signorelli and Sodoma decorate the Great Cloister, illustrating events in the life of the ascetic St Benedict.

Spiaggia dei Pescatori
Wedged in between Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte is the islands most down to earth seaside beach - think colourful vintage fishing boats, soccer matches on the sand and a looming castle perched high above in the distance.

Villa Lante Park
Head to Bagnaia and the 16th-century Villa Lante for some of Italys finest Mannerist gardens. Designed by Vignola, they feature monumental fountains, an ingenious water cascade, and, at the bottom, a rectangular parterre.

Spiaggia del Riso
Just south of town lies Spiaggia del Riso. One of Villasimius’ most striking beaches, this beautiful arc of pale golden sand is lapped by azure waters and scattered with granite boulders polished smooth by the sea.

Mercato del Capo
Capos street market, running the length of Via SantAgostino, is a seething mass of colourful activity during the day, with vendors selling fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, cheese and household goods of every description.

Chiesa di Nostra Signora di Valverde
Next to the town cemetery about 750m from Piazza Quintino Sella, this is another of Iglesias historic churches. It retains little of its 13th-century structure except for the elegant facade, similar to the Duomos.

Each year about 50,000 quintals of grapes are harvested to make two million bottles of wine at the Antichi Poderi di Jerzu, the town’s modern cantina.Guided visits and tastings can be arranged by calling in advance.

Villa Celimontana
With its grassy banks and colourful flower beds, this leafy park is a wonderful place to escape the crowds and enjoy a summer picnic. At its centre is a 16th-century villa housing the Italian Geographical Society.

Spiaggia del Principe
Also known as Portu Li Coggi, this magnificent crescent of white sand is bound by unspoilt macchia and startlingly clear blue waters. Apparently its the Aga Khans favourite. Its around 2.5km east of Capriccioli.

Scuola Mosaicisti
The Scuola Mosaicisti was founded in 1922 and has a public gallery documenting the history of Roman mosaics and its manifestation in present day Friuli. Guided tours can be arranged for €5 or for free with a FVG Card.

Parco Villa Pallavicini
Pallavacini is a manicured park with formal lawns, lakes and a glasshouse that is an epitome of the lush Italian Riviera landscape. The neighbouring Giardino Botanico is home to a small collection of exotic plants.
