Es Portitxol
This little port has a quiet abundance of pleasure craft and is closed off inland by the motorway (at a discreet distance). You can walk, cycle or rollerblade here along the Passeig Marítim from central Palma. The main attraction is a snazzy hotel-restaurant, Hotel Portixol.

Illa A Toxa
Approaching O Grove town, you could cross the bridge for a look around Illa A Toxa (Castilian: Isla La Toja), a manicured island known for its golf course, expensive holiday homes, upmarket hotels and the Capilla de las Conchas , a chapel completely plastered with scallop shells.

Casal de Cultura
This museum is housed in an 18th-century house, Can Mo, and contains a curious collection of old-time furniture, farm implements, a few works of art and all sorts of household objects from down the ages. Regardless of the official opening hours, it seems to open when it feels like.

Puerto Viejo
Getxos old port sits at the northern end of the Playa de Ereaga. Theres not much to see there now, but go up the steps and you emerge into a charming enclave of whitewashed fishermens cottages and narrow alleyways, many festooned with Basque flags and Athletic Bilbao colours.

Transfiguració del Senyor
This church, built atop the foundations of a Moorish mosque, was begun soon after the Christian reconquest, although the facade dates to the 16th century. Inside, note the large rose window, an ornately carved wooden pulpit, and an altar painting depicting Christ on Mount Tabor.

Paseo de las Murallas
Heading southwest from Plaza del Pópulo, then looping back northeastward along the escarpment at the edge of town, this street and pedestrian promenade affords superb views across the olive groves to the distant mountains of the Sierra Mágina (south) and Sierra de Cazorla (east).

Piscinas de la Fajana
At these calm saltwater pools, frothy waves pound just beyond the subtle concrete barriers. About 5km east of Barlovento, on the LP-1 highway, you’ll turn off towards this starkly beautiful coastal spot, where dramatic dark rocks and a savage ocean create a memorable panorama.

Iglesia de Santo Domingo
Originally a hermitage and expanded in the 17th century, this church contains paintings by de Quintana, as well as vivid murals painted in the 20th century by Mariano de Cossío and Antonio González Suárez. There are temporary art exhibitions plus a small ecclesiastical museum.

Casa Palacio de Seda
Fernando is said to have been born in this building in 1452. Its an impressive noble mansion, which now contains an interpretative centre, with fine exhibits on the history of Sos and the life of the king. The tourist office, also housed here, runs guided tours of the building.

Centre Cultural Claustre Sant Bonaventura
The town centres on Plaça dEspanya, which is lined by half a dozen bars. A brisk walk from here offers the only sight of consequence, the Centre Cultural Claustre Sant Bonaventura , an as-yet-unfinished modern exhibition space partly located in an 18th-century, sandstone cloister.

Cala Macarella
An exquisite horseshoe bay on the southwest coast, with white sand, unbelievably turquoise water and cliffs cloaked in pines and holm oaks. It can be popular – visit early, late or in low season. Neighbouring Cala Turqueta is lovely, too. Theres a free car park 15 minutes walk away

Teleférico de Fuente Dé
At 1078m, Fuente Dé lies at the foot of the stark southern wall of the Macizo Central. In four minutes the dramatic Teleférico (Cable Car) de Fuente Dé whisks people 753m up to the top of that wall, from where walkers and climbers can make their way deeper into the central massif.

Playa de Somo
Just beyond Playa del Puntal across the bay from from Santander, Playa de Somo is another sandy beach with, usually, pretty good surf. A year-round ferry (one way/return €2.60/4.65, every 30 or 60 minutes from 9.30am to 7.30pm) runs to Somo from the Estación Marítima Los Reginas .

The beautiful bay of Cala Tarida boasts two beaches of golden sand and is surrounded by villas, family-friendly low-rise hotels and a swanky new beach club. Its a lovely scene, though as there are good bus and boat connections to Sant Antoni, it does get busy in the summer months.
