Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa

This museum has an excellent collection, ranging from an Egyptian mummy and Gothic altarpieces to fine canvases by Caravaggio, El Greco, Picasso and several Impressionists, as well as a comprehensive collection of 20th-century classic Catalan art and some fantastic Orthodox icons.

Passeig Marítim de la Barceloneta
On La Barcelonetas seaward side are the first of Barcelonas beaches , which are popular on summer weekends. The pleasant Passeig Marítim de la Barceloneta, a 1.25km promenade from La Barceloneta to Port Olímpic, is a haunt for strollers and rollers, so bring your rollerblades.

Iglesias San Nicolás de Bari
This landmark church by the northern entrance to the Casco Viejo was consecrated in 1756. Dedicated to St Nicholas of Bari, the patron saint of sailors, it features a quadrangular baroque facade emblazoned with impressive heraldic stonework over the main portal and two bell towers.

Madrid’s Oldest Tree
Just inside the Puerta de Felipe IV stands what is thought to be Madrid’s oldest tree, a Mexican conifer (ahuehuete ). Planted in 1633 and with a trunk circumference of 52m, it was used by French soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century as a cannon mount.

José Luis Ferrer
One of Mallorcas largest and most celebrated wineries, José Luis Ferrer, at the west end of the town, was launched in 1931. To get a better insight into the wine-making process, hook onto one of the 45-minute guided tours, which include a three-wine tasting. Call ahead to book.

Palau Robert
Catalonias regional tourist office, which holds a huge range of books and leaflets, also serves as an exhibition space, mostly for those with Catalan themes. In summer concerts are occasionally held in the peaceful gardens at the back of this fine building or in its main hall.

Cistercian Monastery
This largely insignificant village, just short of the Aragonese frontier, contains a wonderful Cistercian monastery , founded in 1162, where monks lived until the monastery was expropriated in 1835. The order was allowed to return in 1930 and 25 Cistercians are now in residence.

Espalmador
A low-slung island of dunes and sandstone, Espalmador has a beautiful crescent-shaped beach of fine white sand, Platja de SAlga, thats lapped by shallow water. While youre here you could check out the mud pond just to the north of the beach, though in summer it can get pretty dry.

Elogio del Horizonte
The ancient core of Gijón is concentrated on the headland known as Cimadevilla. At the edge of the Parque del Cerro Santa Catalina promontory stands the Elogio del Horizonte, a monumental concrete sculpture by Basque artist Eduardo Chillida that has become a symbol of the city.

Edificio Metrópolis
Among the more interesting buildings along Gran Vía is the stunning, French-designed Edificio Metrópolis, built in 1905, which marks the southern end of Gran Vía. The winged victory statue atop its dome was added in 1975 and is best seen from Calle de Alcalá or Plaza de la Cibeles.

Cala Nova
Just a kilometre north of the resort of Es Canar, this exposed sandy beach (around 250m long) sits pretty on a wide bay. The rural hotel Atzaró has a beach club here, or you can hire umbrellas and loungers right on the shore. During winter storms theres even some surf action.
