On Pine Island, the Randell Research Center is an excellent nature center and the best place in Florida to learn about one of the state’s original inhabitants, the Calusa Indians. Located on the site of a former Calusa Village, the sandy burial mounds and ritual shell mounds of the Calusa can still be found overlooking the waters of Pine Island Sound and throughout acres of subtropical forest and citrus groves.
