Historic Brownsville Museum
Housed in the grand Spanish Colonial–style 1928 Southern Pacific Railroad Depot, this small museum houses historical artifacts and an 1872 steam locomotive. The museum is part of the Mitte Cultural District. Other nearby facilities include an art gallery and a childrens museum.

Ida B Wells House
One of scores of Romanesque houses that date from the 1880s, the Ida B Wells House is named for its 1920s resident. Wells was a crusading journalist who investigated lynchings and other racially motivated crimes. She coined the line: ‘Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.’

Exorcist Stairs
The steep set of stairs dropping down to M St is a popular track for joggers, but more famously its the spot where demonically possessed Father Karras tumbles to his death in 1973 horror classic The Exorcist . Come on foggy nights, when the stone steps really are creepy as hell.

The 55-minute behind-the-scenes tour through the headquarters of the international, 24-hour news giant is a good time for fans. Although visitors dont get very close to Wolf Blitzer (or his cronies), the 9am and noon timeslots offer the best bets for seeing anchors live on-air.

Ask for a free map of the Chico State University campus, or about campus events and tours at the CSU Information Center , on the main floor of Bell Memorial Union. The attractive campus is infused with sweet floral fragrances in spring, and there’s a rose garden at its center.

Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center
Four miles south of town, the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center exhibits the regions flora in gardens and on trails. Take a 2-mile hike down into a canyon, watch butterflies flitting around wildflower gardens, check out a permanent exhibit on mining, or visit the cactus greenhouse.

Mt Greylock State Reservation

Springfield Science Museum
This museum possesses a respectable, if slightly outdated, range of natural-history and science exhibits. The Dinosaur Hall has a full-size replica of a Tyrannosaurus rex, the African Hall covers evolution and ecology and the Seymour Planetarium has shows daily (adult/child $3/2).

Singer Castle
This castle, full of secret passages and hidden doors, is less visited – a plus in summer, when Boldt Castle can be very busy. Romantics should check the option of staying overnight in the main bedroom ($700!). Uncle Sam runs boats from Alex Bay; Schermerhorn Harbor also visits.

Skaket Beach
