Geronimo Springs Museum
This engaging mishmash features a mastodon skull, minerals and artifacts ranging from Mimbres pottery to beautifully worked cowboy saddles, plus sections on the Truth or Consequences radio show and Apache leader Geronimo.

Cascade Locks Historical Museum
Housed in an old lockmasters three-story residence (1905) across from the locks, this museum features Native American artifacts, a fish wheel and a basement taxidermy collection – including a very surprised bobcat.

Frederik Meijer Gardens
The 118-acre gardens feature impressive blooms, and sculptures by Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore and others. It is 5 miles east of downtown via I-196. For more on the visual theme, theres a good art museum downtown, too.

Fort Snelling
East of the mall, Fort Snelling is the states oldest structure, established in 1820 as a frontier outpost in the remote Northwest Territory. Guides in period dress show restored buildings and reenact pioneer life.

El Dorado County Historical Museum
On the El Dorado County Fairgrounds west of downtown (exit north on Placerville Dr from Hwy 50), is this complex of restored buildings, mining equipment and re-created businesses that tell the story of Old Hangtown.

Caddoan Mounds State Historic Site
Notable for its Native American history – the Caddo people built a village and mysterious ceremonial mounds here some 1200 years ago – the Caddoan Mounds State Historic Site is a nice picnic spot on the way to Nacogdoches.

Brandywine Creek State Park
Brandywine Creek State Park is the gem of the area. This green space would be impressive anywhere, but is doubly so considering how close it is to prodigious urban development. Nature trails and shallow streams wend through the park.

Seattle Metropolitan Police Museum
Riot-control gear, uniforms, a jail cell…welcome to the police museum, apparently the largest of its kind on the West Coast. Varied exhibits set out to demystify the police force. Theres an interactive play area for kids.

Roozengaarde Display Garden

Mission San Luis
This 60-acre site is home to a 17th-century Spanish and Apalachee mission thats been wonderfully reconstructed, especially the soaring Council House. Good tours included with admission provide a fascinating taste of 300 years ago.

Kingsburg Historical Park
A small towns worth of historical structures, including a general store, schoolhouse, and windmill were relocated to this square on the east end of town and restored with furnishings and artifacts from mostly the early 1900s.

Kahinapohaku Fishpond
Ongoing restoration efforts have made this the premier fishpond on the island. Tended by konohiki (caretakers) who live simply on site, you can see ancient fishing techniques in use today. It is a half-mile east of mile marker 19.

Charles Hayden Planetarium
Housed in the Museum of Science, the planetarium boasts a state-of-the-art projection system that casts a heavenly star show, programs about black holes and other astronomical mysteries, and evening laser light shows with rock music.

Iwo Jima Memorial
Just outside of Arlington National Cemetery is the Marine Corps War Memorial, better known as the Iwo Jima Memorial. It pays tribute to the six soldiers who raised the US flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in WWII.
