Bandelier National Monument
Bandelier is an excellent choice for folks interested in ancient pueblos. The adventurous can climb four ladders to reach an ancient cave dwelling inhabited by Ancestral Puebloans, who lived here until the mid-1500s.

In between their work running a popular CSA (community-sourced agriculture program) and leading the regional small-farm movement, Tom and Denesse grow everything from organic arugula to rutabagas. Tours in October.

Story Land
This delightful 30-acre theme and amusement park is aimed at the three- to nine-year-old crowd. The rides, activities and shows are small-scale and well done – a refreshing break from the mega-amusements in other places.

Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast of town, off Stillwater Rd (NV Hwy 166), Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge is a haven for over 280 species of birds, best seen during the Spring Wings Festival in mid-May. Free primitive campsites are available.

Presidio of Monterey Museum
On the grounds of the original Spanish fort, this specialized museum of interest only to history buffs looks at Monterey’s history from a military perspective through the Native American, Mexican and American periods.

RE Olds Transportation Museum
The museum has a sweet collection of some 65 vintage cars that sit in the old Lansing City Bus Garage, including the first Oldsmobile, which was built in 1897. Note theyre not all on display at once, but rotate regularly.

Reed Whipple Cultural Center
North of downtown in the city’s so-called ‘Cultural Corridor, ’ well off the First Friday circuit, this alternative art gallery has rotating exhibitions of unusual works by local artists, often students and youth.

Puohokamoa Falls
Immediately after the 11-mile marker you’ll pass Puohokamoa Falls. This waterfall no longer has public access, but you can get a glimpse of it from the bridge, or a bird’s-eye view from the Garden of Eden Arboretum.

Hawaiʻi Heritage Center
Local volunteers with family ties to the community run this friendly gallery that displays changing historical and cultural exhibitions about Oʻahu’s Chinese, Japanese and other ethnic communities (including the Scots!).

Heathcote Botanical Gardens
Beginning as a Japanese-style garden in 1955, today this small but lovely botanical garden features a rainforest, a collection of palm trees from around the world and a historic garden with century-old bonsai trees.

USFS ranger station
The Santa Catalina Mountains are the best-loved and most visited of Tucsons many mountain ranges. Head to Sabino Canyon, where youll find the USFS ranger station. Maps, hiking guides and information are available.

Vermont Teddy Bear Factory
Tours of this thriving, touristy factory demonstrate the entire teddy bear life cycle, from designers sketches, to stuffing and stitching, to the bear hospital, which patches up tattered beasts for their devoted owners.

Zion National Park
If possible, enter Zion from the east, following Hwy 9 west from Hwy 89. The route is jaw-droppingly scenic as it rolls through colorful red rocks and a gallery-dotted tunnel before switchbacking 3.5 miles into the canyon.

Volunteer Park Conservatory
The conservatory is a classic Victorian greenhouse built in 1912. Filled with palms, cacti and tropical plants, it features five galleries representing different world environments. Check out the creepy corpse flower.

Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center
The Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center exhibits every aspect of wetlands life, from music to the environmental impacts of oil exploration. Musicians jam here Monday evenings (5:30pm) and rangers guide seasonal boat tours.

Virginia State Capitol
Designed by Thomas Jefferson, the capitol building was completed in 1788 and houses the oldest legislative body in the Western Hemisphere – the Virginia General Assembly, established in 1619. Free tours available.

Oggs Hogan
Cortez St, which runs east of the plaza, has become a hive of antique and collectible stores, as well as home to Ogg’s Hogan , with its excellent selection of Native American crafts and jewelry, mostly from Arizona tribes.

Oak Ridge Cemetery
The impressive Lincoln’s Tomb sits in Oak Ridge Cemetery , north of downtown. The gleam on the nose of Lincoln’s bust, created by visitors’ light touches, indicates the numbers of those who pay their respects here.

Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami
The Museum of Contemporary Art has long been a reason to hike up to the far reaches of North Miami. Its galleries feature excellent rotating exhibitions of contemporary art by local, national and international artists.

Monique Meloche Gallery
One of Chicagos tastemakers, the gallery features provocative paintings, neon and mixed media. If nothing else, have a look at the wall that shows works through huge windows to engage passers-by on Division St.
