Ballard Building
Ballard’s only major terra-cotta structure, this was built in the 1920s by the Fraternal Order of Eagles. It once held a community hospital and now houses the Ballard News-Tribune .

Bullocks Wilshire

Barter Theatre
Founded during the Depression, Barter Theatre earned its name from audiences trading food for performances. Actors Gregory Peck and Ernest Borgnine cut their teeth on Barters stage.

Check out the opulent former residence of Charles Schreiner (the man who built half the town). The exterior stonework is impressive, and if you like historic homes, head inside to see more.

Missouri Botanical Garden
Dating to 1859, these gardens hold a 14-acre Japanese garden, a carnivorous plant bog and a Victorian-style hedge maze. Its at the north end of Tower Grove Park, near I-44 exit 287B.

Mission San Rafael Arcángel
The town began with this mission, founded in 1817, which served as a sanatorium for Native Americans suffering from European diseases. The present building is a replica dating from 1949.

Mission Concepción
The first mission along the trail features a Spanish colonial church built in 1755. Its a passably interesting stop for history buffs, and essential for anyone who doesnt do things by half.

Owens Valley Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center
A mile west of Hwy 395, this underutilized tribal cultural center includes exhibits on local basketry and the use of medical herbs; behind the building is an interpretive native plant walk.

National Law Enforcement Museum (Future Site)
The group that operates the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial has broken ground on an accompanying museum, which will open across from the memorial sometime in 2016 or after.

To connect with local Korean culture, pop into this museum which has changing art exhibits and cultural events. It sometimes closes between rotating exhibits. Call before you come by.

The 3348-acre Kittatinny Valley State Park is home to lakes with boat launches, lime outcroppings and campsites, plus former railroads that have been converted into hiking and cycling trails.

Jungle Drums
On Captiva Island, Jungle Drums has metal, wood, glass and clay media, much of it fashioned into wildlife motifs. The exterior, carved with dolphins and turtles, is a work of art itself.

Floating south of downtown and connected via Wabasha St, Harriet Island is a lovely place to meander. It has a river walk, paddlewheel boat cruises, concert stages and fishing docks.
