In one of the oldest buildings in Crested Butte. Its a worthwhile visit for the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame or to see a terrific model railway. Exhibits range from geology to mining and early home life.

Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
This museum covers African American teams, such as the KC Monarchs and New York Black Yankees, that flourished until baseball became fully integrated. Its part of the Museums at 18th & Vine complex.

Garden of Eden
In 1907 Samuel Dinsmoor began filling his yard with enormous concrete sculptures reflecting his eccentric philosophies. On a tour you hear some wonderful stories and see his remains in a glass-topped coffin (!).

Yale University Art Gallery
Americas oldest university art museum boasts American masterworks by Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper and Jackson Pollock, as well as a superb European collection that includes Vincent van Goghs The Night Café .

Lassen Volcanic National Park
Impressive Lassen Volcanic National Park has steaming hydrothermal sulfur pools and cauldrons that can be seen from the boardwalk in Bumpass Hell. At 10,457ft Lassen Peak is the worlds largest plug-dome volcano.

Adirondack Museum
Set on 30 acres, this museum has creative exhibits on the mountains human-centered stories, from mining and logging industries to quirky hermits and Victorian tourists. You can easily spend half a day here.

Olana
In pure aesthetic terms, this is finest of the Hudson Valley mansions, as landscape painter Frederic Church designed every detail, inspired by his travels in the Middle East and his appreciation of the river view.

Hwy 240 Badlands Loop Rd
The parks north unit gets the most visitors; this stunning road is easily reached from I-90 (exits 110 and 131) and you can drive it in an hour if youre in a hurry (and not stuck behind an RV). Lookouts and vistas abound.

Castillo de San Marcos National Monument
This incredibly photogenic fort is another atmospheric monument to longevity: its the countrys oldest masonry fort, completed by the Spanish in 1695. Park rangers lead programs hourly and shoot off cannons most weekends.

Mattress Factory
Since 1977, this art space has hosted the absolute avant-garde. It now occupies several neighborhood buildings, and always has something surprising on. Note the good café here too, as theres a shortage of food in the area.

Cave Store
Waves have carved a series of caves into the sandstone cliffs east of La Jolla Cove. The largest is called Sunny Jim Cave , which you can access via this store. Taller visitors, watch your head as you descend the 145 steps.

IB Magee Beach Park
The main access point to this county-run park is via Beach St (try to remember that). The park has rest rooms, the Horace Caldwell fishing pier and seasonal concession stands. Parking your car on the sand may require a permit.

Patee House Museum
Still imposing, the 1858 Patee House has had a long and historic life. Next door, the outlaw Jesse James was killed at what is now the Jesse James Home Museum (adult/child $4/2). The fateful bullet hole is still in the wall.

George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum
This museum has exterior windows designed by Tiffany Studios and a fine collection of 19th-century American and European paintings, textiles, ceramics and more. The samurai armor collection is among the finest outside of Japan.

Headley
This marvelously old place holds the private collection of the late George Headley, a jewelry designer whose gemstone trinkets and handmade dollhouses are on display, along with a truly bizarre garage turned seashell grotto.

Annes Beach
Anne’s is one of the best beaches in these parts. The small ribbon of sand opens upon a sky-bright stretch of tidal flats and a green tunnel of hammock and wetland. Nearby mudflats are a joy to get stuck in, and will be much loved by the kids.
