North Dakota Heritage Center
Behind the Sacagawea statue, the North Dakota Heritage Center has details on everything from Norwegian bachelor farmers to the scores of nuclear bombs perched on missiles in silos across the state. Four new galleries have doubled its size.

Halepalaoa Beach
Running southeast from the pier is the reef-protected and shaded Halepalaoa Beach, which seems to have come from desert-island central casting. In winter, the number of whales breaching offshore may outnumber the humans basking on the sand.

Walters Art Museum
Dont pass up this excellent, eclectic gallery: it spans more than 55 centuries, from ancient to contemporary, with excellent displays of Asian treasures, rare and ornate manuscripts and books, and a comprehensive French paintings collection.

Shoshone Point
Walk 1 mile along the mostly level dirt road to marvelously uncrowded Shoshone Point, a rocky promontory and some of the canyon’s best views. This viewpoint is unmarked; look for the small parking lot about 1.2 miles east of Yaki Point.

di Rosa Art + Nature Preserve
West of downtown, scrap-metal sheep graze Carneros vineyards at 217-acre di Rosa Preserve, a stunning collection of Northern California art, displayed indoors in galleries and outdoors in sculpture gardens. Reservations recommended for tours.

Weisman Art Museum
The Weisman, which occupies a swooping silver structure by architect Frank Gehry, is a uni (and city) highlight. The airy main galleries hold cool collections of 20th century American art, ceramics, Korean furniture and works on paper.

Sachuest Beach
East of Eastons Beach along Purgatory Rd lies Sachuest, named for the nearby wildlife sanctuary. Its prettier and cleaner than Eastons and has showers, a snack bar and a lovely setting, overlooked by the neo-Gothic tower of St Georges prep school.

Lyon St Steps
Two blocks, between Broadway and Green St, flanked by forests and glamorous mansions – including Senator Dianne Feinsteins. Jaw-dropping bay and Marina views. Popular with stair-runners and coffee klatches. Connects Cow Hollow with Pacific Heights.

Georgia Museum of Art
A smart, modern gallery open to the public where brainy, arty types set up in the wired lobby for personal study while art hounds gawk at modern sculpture in the courtyard garden and the tremendous collection from American realists of the 1930s.

Eastern California Museum
Contains one of the most complete collections of Paiute and Shoshone baskets in the country, as well as artifacts from the Manzanar Relocation Center and historic photographs of primitively equipped local rock climbers scaling Sierra peaks, including Mt Whitney.

Detroit Institute of Arts
The cream of the museum crop. The centerpiece is Diego Riveras mural Detroit Industry, which fills an entire room and reflects the citys blue-collar labor history. Beyond it are Picassos, suits of armor, mod African American paintings, puppets and troves more.

Tunnels Rd
Take Colorado Ave north from Main St in Buena Vista and follow it a couple of miles. Keep driving after it becomes dirt, continuing on through a series of blasted-out tunnels in the rock, and a bit further on youll come to Elephant Rock - you cant miss it.

Woody Guthrie Center
Woody Guthrie gained fame for his 1930s folk ballads that told stories of the Dust Bowl and the depression. His life and music are recalled in this impressive new museum, where you can listen to his music and explore his legacy via the works of Dylan and more.

Hidden Valley Trail
Some 8 miles south of the West Entrance, this whimsically dramatic cluster of rocks is a rock climbers’ mecca, but just about anyone can enjoy a clamber on the giant boulders. An easy 1-mile trail loops through it and back to the parking lot and picnic area.

Missouri History Museum
Presents the story of St Louis, starring such worthies as the Worlds Fair, Charles Lindbergh (look for the sales receipt for his first plane – he bought it at a variety store!) and a host of bluesmen. Oral histories from those who fought segregation are moving.

Florida Aquarium
Tampas excellent aquarium is among the states best. Cleverly designed, the re-created swamp lets you walk among herons and ibis as they prowl the mangroves. Programs let you swim with the fishes (and the sharks) or take a catamaran ecotour in Tampa Bay.

Fishermans Wharf includes the following sights: Pier 39 , Musée Mécanique , San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park , National Parks Visitors Center , USS Pampanito , SS Jeremiah OBrien , Aquarium of the Bay , San Francisco Carousel and Ghirardelli Square .

Ute Indian Museum
One of the few American museums dedicated to one tribe. The Ute are the traditional people of western Colorado. The museum is situated on a homestead that belonged to legendary Uncompahgre Ute chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta. A visitors center is attached to the museum.

California Museum
This modern museum is home to the California Hall Of Fame and so the only place to simultaneously encounter César Chávez, Mark Zuckerberg and Amelia Earhart. The California Indians exhibit is a highlight, with artifacts and oral histories of more than 100 distinct tribes.

National Frontier Trails Museum
Gives a compelling look at the tough life for the pioneers along the Santa Fe, California and Oregon Trails; many began their journey in Independence. Youll learn that a pioneer met his elephant when he realized that the challenges of the journey were simply too big.
