Belize City Cruise Port

With more than its fair share of natural delights, Belize is paradise for outdoor-adventure enthusiasts, and Belize City is the gateway to its spoils. Shore excursions include river kayaking, horseback riding, Mayan temples, ziplining and cave tubing, or if you’d rather be under the water, the country’s coral reef is one of the best in the world.

Because of this ecological abundance, Belize City is often overlooked, but as the cultural capital of the country, it’s worth a look around. If you do want to get out, some of the cayes are accessible for a day trip by boat or tiny plane.

How to get to Belize City

Cruise ships anchor in the harbor; you’ll be tendered to shore and dropped off at the Tourism Village, from where you can walk to Belize City’s top attractions, or find cabs and water taxis to explore outside the city.

One Day in Belize City

Explore the city’s cultural highlights for an hour or two before making your way to one of the cayes. Start by walking along the water north from the cruise port to the Museum of Belize. Browse the displays that detail the country’s history before walking down to the Image Factory for a look at Belize’s best contemporary art.

Check out the nearby Swing Bridge – one of the only of its kind in the world – before walking to the Caye Caulker water taxi terminal to make the 45-minute trip by boat to the caye. At just 1 mile wide, the island is the perfect spot for a little beach bumming – grab some seafood and a drink at one of the waterfront restaurants, go for a swim, rent a bike for some leisurely exercise (emphasis on ‘leisurely’ – the island motto is ‘go slow’ and there are no cars) or explore the water by kayak.

Port Information

English is the official language of Belize, and the currency is the Belize dollar. You can find ATMs in the city, but many shops and restaurants accept US dollars and credit cards.
