Zealand is New Zealand's national airline and it is also New Zealand's flag carrier. It began life in 1940 as Tasman Empire Airways Limited but then the government changed its name to Air New Zealand Limited. Air New Zealand's original function was to provide flights over the Tasman to Australia. The airline was a privately owned company until 1965, when the New Zealand government privatised it. This was in effect until 2001 but then the New Zealand government once again became the owner.
