Zen Tour and Meditation in Kyoto

TIME : 2016/2/24 15:38:30

For an enriching cultural experience in Kyoto beyond the temples and shrines, experiencing Zen meditation within one of those temples may be an ideal activity.

Shunko-in Temple 春光院 (Temple of the Ray of Spring Light) offers daily meditation classes designed specifically for English-speaking foreigners. The Buddhist preaching and instructions are conducted in English, and during the 90-minute class, visitors will learn the basics of Zen meditation — from sitting posture and breathing methods to how to lead your everyday life according to religious, philosophical and neuroscientific concepts.

Meditation sessions consist of 10 minutes of instruction and mediation, followed by 15 minutes of more meditation sessions and explanations of the gardens and screens at the temple.

Shunkoin Temple is also located near the three UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, Kinkakuji Temple (the Golden Pavilion), Ryoanji Temple, and Ninnaji Temple. They also have Buddhist style wedding services available in English and Japanese and welcome all couples regardless of their faith and sexual orientation.

Address: 42 Myoshinji-Cho, Hanazono, Ukyo-Ku, Kyoto 616-8035. It shows on many english map websites as Myōshin-ji Temple so is a bit confusing.
