Those interested in traditional crafts will enjoy a visit to the Echizen Bamboo Doll Village 越前竹人形の里 in Fukui Prefecture. The tasteful entrance is located in a grove of bamboo, setting the stage for beautiful displays of historical and modern works of art. There are not just dolls, but other artifacts using the medium of bamboo, such as props from Noh and kabuki theater. The traditional bamboo dolls made from long-jointed bamboo, the so-called “mousou” bamboo, and other bamboo types.

Not only do visitors have a chance to watch skilled artisans, but they can try their hand in a well-equipped workshop. There is also a gift shop and restaurant in the complex.

Echizen Bamboo Doll Village is open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The restaurant on the second floor features local ingredients and is open from 11 am to 3 pm. It is closed from December 26 through 31.

Admission is 300 yen for adults or 150 yen for elementary and junior high school students.

To get to Echizen Bamboo Doll Village from Fukui City, take the Keijuku bus bound for Eihi-ji from JR Fukui Station. Transfer to the Keijuku bus towards Awara Onsen at the Higashifuruichi stop. Get off at the “Echizen Bamboo Doll Village” stop.
