The Tohoku region offers some of the most spectacular scenery in Japan. The Tohoku region is a large area consisting of seven prefectures; Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, Fukushima, and Niigata. Tohoku is renowned for its countryside, mountains, lakes, hot springs, high quality rice and winters that bring abundant snow in some areas.

In winter, the Snow Country of Yukiguni on the western Japan Sea coast has some of the highest snowfall figures in the world, bringing with it great skiing and after a long day skiing, a large variety of hot springs to take the chills off. Tsugaru Minamida Onsen in Machii, Hirakawa-shi has a unque “Apple” theme that offers a variety of baths for visitors enjoyment, such as the famous outdoor apple bath, a cascading bath, and a takezumi bamboo charcoal bath.

Tohoku also has many heritage sites, making it a good place for the history buff in the family. Tsuruga Castle is a symbol of Aizu-wakamatsu-shi and has the only red tile roofs in Japan.

Enjoy sakura cherry blossom viewing? Since the cherry trees blossom a few weeks later in Tohoku than they do in Tokyo and Kyoto, you can prolong your cherry blossom season by a quick trip. What better to enjoy with sakura viewing than some local wine and sake, another regional speciality of the area.
