UNIQLO, Kyoto Station

There is an underground mall called Porta in front of Kyoto station. It has multiple entrances around the station area, including escalators leading down next to the main station entrance. If you take the escalator, you will find over 100 stores and restaurants, conveniently sheltered from the elements. To the left is the largest concentration of restaurants, and to the right is a section with high-quality Kyoto souvenirs. The central portion is mostly gift shops and clothing stores including Uniqlo which is a great clothing shop for reasonably priced, well made garments.

Porta is wheelchair and stroller accessible, and there is a nursing room next to the information desk in the center. There are many entrances and exits, so note the one you came in or you can get quite turned around underground. Hours vary, but most stores are open from 10 am to 8 pm, and restaurants may be open until 10 pm.

Omurice

Omurice

There is a wide range of middle-priced restaurants so Porta is a good place to find a meal. For the less adventurous, the Italian restaurant at the far end of the food court is highly recommended. There are many good options for Japanese food, from sushi to tempura to udon noodles. A fun family meal can be omurice, located near the information desk, with omelette-style dishes filled with rice and chopped vegetables and meat, then topped with tomato sauce. At peak tourist times, lines can be long in the food area, but the food is good quality and the restaurants are used to serving foreigners, so have picture menus or ones with translations.

Shop Hours are : 10:00 to 20:00 (until 20:30 on Fri and Sat)
Restaurant Hours: 11:00 to 22:00
