Geisha

Geisha and Maiko are talented entertainers, skilled in the arts of dance, music, games and conversation. Maiko are apprentices. Historically they might start training as young as 3 or 4 years old, but now most do not begin until their late teens. They study with an older mentor, following her around to engagements and learning all the arts necessary to be a successful hostess for exclusive, paying clients.

Some people think that geisha are prostitutes, but this is not the case. During WWII, prostitutes called themselves “geisha girls” when selling themselves to the American armed forces stationed in Japan, and this is probably the origin of the misconception.

In reality, geisha, or geiko, as they are called in Kyoto, are highly-trained performers. A maiko’s apprenticeship can last for years before she goes through the ceremony that makes her a full geisha and permits her to earn full wages. Maiko wear elaborate kimono with obi, or belts, that drape to the ankle, special tall wooden shoes, and fancy headdresses. There are five hair styles that reflect her stage of training. The kimono drapes at the back, showing the nape of the neck, which is considered erotic. By contrast, a full geisha wears a much simpler and more modest costume.

There are five geisha districts in Kyoto. The most prestigious and well known is Gion Kobu. Travelers often walk the streets in hope of seeing and taking photographs of geisha and maiko heading to their engagements. Maiko also make many public appearances while practicing their skills.
