Also called the Sagano Romantic Train, the Sagano Scenic Railway used to be a regular passenger train, but the route was replaced by a more direct train in 1989. Now it is used for sightseeing and boasts old-fashioned trains with wooden bench seats in the four enclosed cars and one open one. Studiotwain shot a nice video of the train and the journey.

The tracks wind along the forested ravine with views of the Hozu River. It is lovely any time of the year, but is especially beautiful when the fall colors peak.

All seats are reserved and cost ¥600 for adults or ¥300 for children one way. The train can be ridden in either direction between the Torokko Saga Station and the Torokko Kameoka Station. It takes about 25 minutes to complete the run, which is 7 kilometers (about 4.3 miles) long. The train runs between 9 am and 4 or 5 pm, and is closed many Wednesdays. The train does not run December 30 through February 28. The official website has creative English, but a complete operating schedule:  http://www.sagano-kanko.co.jp/eng/
